I read a letter to the editor in today’s New Haven Journal that accused oil companies of “greasing their pockets” with profits from rising gasoline prices. I’m sure the writer meant “lining their palms” in order to reflect their good fortune.

In an unrelated news item we learn that the White House has been looking for a “War Czar” to run our two wars. Apparently the “generals in the field” aren’t getting results. The Russians got rid of Nicholas a long time ago and so far no one who was asked said, “sure, I’ll be your Brownie, Mr. Shrub.” Congressional Democrats have been trying to get through to the current Commander-in-Chief about ending one of the wars but apparently Karl Rove doesn’t approve of asking them to be the new Tsar.

Dick Cheney has been reduced to talking with Rush Limbaugh which is about as hard up as a politician can get. Wonder why Shrub dosen’t just confirm that Dick is already the de facto War Autocrat. Why embarass the mal-administration and have to endure responses like those of retired Marine Gen. John J. “Jack” Sheehan, a former top NATO commander who said, “The very fundamental issue is, they don’t know where the hell they’re going… So rather than go over there, develop an ulcer and eventually leave, I said, ‘No, thanks.’ ” We should make Jack the vice president, methinks.
